"Choosing The Right Network Marketing Sponsor Is One Of The Most Important Decisions You Will Ever Make In Network Marketing"

- Robert Kiyosaki, NY Times Best Selling Author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad series

Choosing the right network marketing sponsor can mean the difference between massive success, small earnings, or complete failure.

I once heard someone say, "If you want to go somewhere, it is best to find someone who has already been there."

For most people in the network marketing industry, choosing their sponsor is "simple". They choose the friend or family member that shared the opportunity with them. This could be just fine, except that most friends and family don't know how to guide you to building a successful network marketing business of your own.

They just don't possess the necessary skills to lead a team, market their businesses efficiently, train their downlines, or communicate effectively.

So, what then, does it take to be a good network marketing sponsor and what do you need to look for in one?

Leadership

The simple definition of leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal. Even simpler, the leader is the inspiration and director of the action. They're the person in the group that possesses the combination of personality and skills that make others want to follow his or her direction.

Your network marketing sponsor must be a leader and help you to:

  • Create a vision of success in your business
  • Think and generate ideas and possibilities in new ways
  • Put thoughts into action
  • Reach toward extraordinary growth
  • Lead you through fears and obstacles
Instead of dwelling on problems, the perfect leader looks at the big picture. They live the team's mission and implement, motivate, and dedicate all their efforts to accomplishing the goals at hand.

As a leader, your network marketing sponsor does not have power over you, make decisions for you, or tell you what to do. Rather, their role as your network marketing sponsor should be to empower you through service.

Leadership is about creating an environment within the team where everyone feels a sense of self-worth, where people grow and choose to be present physically, mentally, and emotionally -- because they want to be.

In order to attract people to you, you have to be a leader. In order to be a leader, you have to show that you know what you're doing.

Which brings us to our next criteria for a network marketing sponsor...

Network Marketing System

Most people in network marketing fail because they are not given a clear blueprint, or system, to follow. Without a well-defined system, many new independent distributors can quickly become discouraged. They do not experience the success that first drew them to the network marketing industry and quickly lose passion, excitement, and commitment.

An effective system can be helpful in addressing two essential areas...

1. it will help new distributors achieve quick and consistent success, and 2. it sets the stage for long-term retention

...and of course, the more positive and rewarding their experience with network marketing, the longer people will remain active in the opportunity.

A good marketing system is simple and duplicable. The emphasis should always be that anyone willing to be persistent and consistent can do it if they follow the clearly defined steps.

It is essential for you to realize the power of following a system that includes a fast way to get started.

The McDonald's franchise is a great example of this. When you walk into a McDonalds in any part of the world you will get the same taste, ingredients, packaging, and service. The founder of McDonalds, Ray Kroc, realized that the power of an easily followed system would be very important in the success of his business. You better believe that when a new McDonalds restaurant opens its doors for the first time that the owner and the employees have been given specific training on how to successfully operate the business. It's by plugging into a clear and proven system that is the key to their success.

This is also true in network marketing. If new independent distributors are left to go it alone, their business is doomed to fail from the start. If, however, you are given a clear, step-by-step guide to following a system, you are much more likely to be successful from the beginning.

For those of you who have been in the network marketing industry before, you know that most network marketing sponsors teach their teams to build their business by making a list of friends and family, buying and cold calling opportunity leads, passing out flyers, talking to strangers in the grocery stores (the dreaded "Three Foot Rule"), and so on. Most people have failed miserably using these old-school techniques.

The reason?? That's not marketing...it's selling!

Having a good marketing system in place will not only bring prospects to you, it will also generate an upfront retail profit for your business. Your prospects will pre-qualify and sell themselves!

Wouldn't it be nice to have your network marketing business paying for itself without having to rely on dipping into your own pockets to finance the business?

Training

The more you begin to understand how this business works, the more you will understand the need for your network marketing sponsor to provide you with the right training, guidance, system and tools needed to put it all together and make your business successful.

Keep in mind the key purpose of training, namely, to acquire knowledge, to acquire a skill or to change a behavior or attitude.

Anyone who's serious about building a successful network marketing business needs to learn...

  • Business Skills
  • Sales
  • Marketing (online and offline)
  • Leadership
...and it's the role of your network marketing sponsor to train you in the basics of these areas.

It's up to you to take action!

How will your network marketing sponsor train you?

Focus must be put on the individual. Your network marketing sponsor should recognize the need for different training methods according to different styles of learning. None of us learn the same way and so your sponsor should be able to tailor their delivery style and effectiveness to suit your learning needs.

Communication

Poor communication is another major reason why a group will fail. If a network marketing sponsor can't talk and connect with their team, they are not serving the team's needs.

In this section, I'm not speaking about your network marketing sponsor's communication skills, although it is very important. When I say communication, I am referring to whether or not your network marketing sponsor is "staying in touch".

Consider your network marketing sponsor as your Customer Service Representative.

Does your network marketing sponsor:

  • Make themselves available to you when you have questions?
  • Listen to your wants, needs, and concerns?
  • Provide relevant and useful feedback?
  • Keep you updated on events or happenings within the company?
  • Phone, email, or meet you in person?
Or...does your network marketing sponsor leave you floundering to "go it alone" never to hear from them again once they've sponsored you into their business.

A little more on the importance of communication...

A complete marketing system will bring your prospects to you but this does not mean that by using the internet it's an excuse to remove human interaction.

Your main goal should be to get your marketing system built up to the point where you no longer have to sell personally. When someone comes to you through your marketing system, they don't need to be sold. They are ready to buy. It's your job to help them do that. However, this does not mean you ever want to completely remove the personal interaction from your business. Do not remove the network in network marketing.

Is it possible to build a network marketing business completely hands off without ever speaking to someone?

Yes, but it's impossible to keep long-term stability if you do.

To build strong foundations that will last, you need to develop relationships with others. In order for this to happen, you have to be able to communicate with them.

Modern tools such as e-mail and the internet are indeed tools of communication, but not a replacement for good communication skills.
